‘Smart’ charging is our definition of the best times to charge your electric vehicle at home. It most often represents times when your costs are lowest, grid strain is down, and clean energy is most abundant. This is often called ‘off-peak’ charging times, but as more vehicles connect to the grid, off-peak times may be harder to pin down, and they may shift day by day and minute by minute based on factors such as your neighborhood’s charging demand and clean energy availability.
On your dashboard, you’ll notice a smart charging percentage.
For those using the Automatic Smart Charging service the smart charging percentage represents the combination of:
- home charging you’ve done that occurs within the optimized schedule created by evPulse (our algorithms determine when the charging occur such that your target battery level is reached every day)
- home charging you’ve done that occurs within your utility’s seasonal off-peak times
The smart charging time percentage is calculated by dividing the amount of energy your vehicle consumed during the specified times above, by the total energy that you consumed charging over a given day.
You can increase your smart time percentage by plugging in whenever you are home, and by minimizing the times you override the optimized schedules generated for you by evPulse.
